Dulce de Leche Recipe (Easy Homemade)

Creamy, rich, caramel-like dulce de leche is a classic treat used in many Latin American desserts. You can make it at home using just milk, sugar, or even with the easy condensed milk method.

Ingredients

Traditional Method

  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1¼ cups sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp baking soda

Condensed Milk Method (Easy)

  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk (397 g)

Instructions

Traditional Method

  1. In a large pot, combine milk, sugar, and baking soda.
  2. Cook on medium heat until it starts boiling.
  3. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring often.
  4. Mixture will slowly thicken and turn golden.
  5. Cook for 1–1.5 hours until thick and caramel-like.
  6. Stir in vanilla extract, cool, and store.

Condensed Milk Method (Boiling Can)

  1. Remove the label from the condensed milk can.
  2. Place the can in a pot and fully cover with water.
  3. Boil for 2–3 hours (longer time = darker color).
  4. Cool completely before opening.
  5. Scoop out creamy dulce de leche.

Tips

  • Stir often to prevent burning.
  • Use a heavy-bottomed pot for even cooking.
  • Store in a jar for up to 2 weeks in the fridge.

Dulce de Leche FAQs

1. Is dulce de leche the same as caramel?

No. Caramel is made from sugar only, while dulce de leche is made from milk + sugar, giving it a creamier texture.

2. Can I make it without condensed milk?

Yes, the traditional milk-sugar method works perfectly but takes longer.

3. How do I thicken dulce de leche?

Cook longer on low heat and stir continuously until thick.

4. Does dulce de leche need refrigeration?

Yes. Store it in an airtight jar in the refrigerator.

5. Why did my dulce de leche burn?

High heat or not stirring enough can cause the mixture to stick and burn. Always cook low and slow.

6. Can I use evaporated milk instead of condensed milk?

Not recommended—evaporated milk lacks the sugar needed for caramelization.
